Election lessons: let’s talk

In West Vancouver we are not immune from the polarizing talk that has become so prominent in politics—amplified by social and other media. If there is anything to be learned from all sides in recent elections it is the importance of speaking directly with one another about what we want to see.

We may have lost sight of the importance of working through issues together, which is the basis of any kind of positive change. It can seem that our politics is so polarized or monolithic that nothing can be achieved, even at the local level.

So, what can we do about it?

Here, at West Vancouver’s Positive Voices we believe that talking to each other in our local communities is the best way to build a better West Vancouver. Engaging with each other on a human level allows us to imagine ways to work together — especially when we may disagree. Get involved in our local clubs, groups and council committees. Meet your fellow citizens in real life and build a community that we all want. There are also many rewarding volunteering opportunities in West Vancouver and across the North Shore.

Let’s make it normal again to discuss issues without rancor or simplistic memes (okay, some of them are pretty funny), appreciating each point of view for its own merit. No one really knows where the next best idea will come from. We need them all.

Yes, we know. We’re using an email to encourage all of us to build in-person connections. We can’t go back. But, we can do better.

We hope to see you offline, West Van Positive Voices

p.s. If this resonates, please consider forwarding this email to three of your friends. We’ll keep them connected with the big issues in the community that affect all of us.
