Support West Van’s climate plans

  • Municipal Hall 750 17th Street West Vancouver, V7V 3T3 (map)

On Monday 26 September West Van Council will vote on developing a new Climate Action Strategy and consider approving projects funded from the new Environmental Levy, which raised $1.2 million for climate adaptation and mitigation.

These votes underline the vital role municipalities play in combating climate change, and comes soon after BC, yet again, experienced one of the hottest summers ever recorded.

West Van has demonstrated leadership on climate action for more than 20 years. More recently emissions reduction was enshrined as policy in our Official Community Plan, and the District declared a climate emergency.

The climate strategy will introduce a ‘carbon budget’ so that we can turn long-term targets to reduce emissions into annual plans. The funds will be used to address impacts from sea level rise and coastal flooding.

We need climate action now – not after the municipal election. Protecting our environment must take priority over election cycles.

And given that members of this council might not be re-elected, a vote in favour of these vital measures could be part of their positive legacy.

E-bike incentive pilot scheme

We all heard about the shortage of bikes during the pandemic, but cycling has been growing in popularity around the world for years.

The arrival of dependable electric bikes has been a significant factor recently, especially for communities like West Van, with our hills and big population of seniors.

Cycling advocates support e-bikes because they enable people with physical limits to bike, and the evidence shows they reduce car journeys, especially for people with longer commutes.

That’s why Positive Voices supports a new e-bike pilot scheme, modelled on a program implemented in Saanich a year ago, which would give incentives of between $500 and $1500 to people from lower income households.
