Cleanup removes 6,500+ pieces of trash

To mark Earth Day weekend, community groups Positive Voices West Vancouver, Ocean Ambassadors Canada, and Hollyburn Sailing Club teamed up with over 75 volunteers to clean up 1km of Ambleside beach. Volunteers picked up 6,689 trash items large and small, including plastics, metal and styrofoam, which never decomposes.

The largest items included a folding camping chair buried in the sand and two metres of heavy-duty anchor rope. Cigarette butts were the most common items collected. Yuck!

Make every day Earth Day

The three-fingered salute in the photo refers to Pick Up 3, a growing movement urging everyone to pick up three pieces of trash every time they’re out in the natural environment. Join in and log your trash using their fun online Trash Meter.

Happy trash-picking, happier earth!
