Watch the Fire Weather Event Video

Award-winning author and journalist John Vaillant discussed the risks posed by wildfires in front of a capacity crowd at West Vancouver's Kay Meek Theatre on Friday 24th October.

The talk, hosted by Positive Voices, drew more than 400 people, and is now available to watch online here:

Vancouver-based Vaillant is the author of the best-selling books The Tiger and The Golden Spruce. He garnered considerable international acclaim for Fire Weather (2023), his account of Canada’s worst natural disaster, the 2016 Fort McMurray wildfire.

The speech was the latest of many Vaillant has given around the world over the last decade about the science behind extreme weather and the role of climate change in creating conditions for enormous fires, even in temperate rainforests.

The event was sponsored by the Friends of Cypress Provincial Park, which has worked to promote and preserve the park’s natural environment for 35 years.

John Vaillant donated his speaking fee to West Vancouver Firefighters Charitable Society - and we would encourage all supporters to do likewise.
