At council this week

On Monday May 9th two proposals before council - one new and one familiar to many - will signal whether our elected representatives are serious about addressing the housing crisis and the needs of our community.

2195 Gordon Avenue

After extensive planning 2195 Gordon, the big site on 22nd behind the Community Centre, is ready to go forward to public consultation.

The project will include 156 below-market rental units and an adult day centre, developed in conjunction with Kiwanis Hosing Society and Vancouver Coastal Health Authority.

Despite the investment made and the long time spent on planning, the project could still be voted down for political reasons (reminder: there is an election in October).

Councillors need to be reminded that there is public support for affordable housing and healthcare for our citizens, and listen to facts, rather than the misinformation being spread by some.

2905 Marine Drive

A new proposal at the corner of Marine & 29th, opposite the Presbyterian Church would see a sensitively designed multi-family building with 8 townhouses, over 3 floors.

This kind of 'missing middle’ housing is desperately needed, and would contribute towards the kind of accommodation councillors say they want, but rarely approve. Approvals for the 2018-2022 period include zero townhouses or multiplexes, and only 18 other ‘missing middle’ units.
