2195 Gordon

The 2195 Gordon Avenue project will bring 156 below-market rental units, and an adult day care centre to West Van. But it faces one final council vote - to approve development permits - before it gets the green light.

It is vital that the proposal goes ahead so that we can help young families, seniors, and essential workers find appropriate housing in our community.

As Councillor Bill Soprovich said at the June 13th meeting:

“We started this many years back and we went through a complete iteration over and over again as to what we wanted.

“We were forced to look at the needs of housing for individuals. That was a very sensible process.

“I never saw, on that particular site, that we looked at a 20-story building and that we were going after a large sum of money.

“This is not about money.

“It's been explained over and over for those that are not catching the message: it is not a subsidy.*

“There are other properties that we own that can make us, as everybody wants, a large sum of money.

That’s not what this was all about…(but) the care for a fellow human being in this community when they see their rents jumping at a rate that they cannot afford to live here anymore.

“It's about time we had a look at that and see what we can do about it. And this was our first attempt to do that.

“I think it was the right thing to do.”**

Members of the public are able to address Council directly, with respect to the development permits, at the June 27th meeting. Click here to find out how.
